Despite Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) making significant strides in reducing planned load shedding over the past decade, urban Kathmandu Valley households still face unplanned outages — sometimes lasting 4 to 8 hours during peak demand months from October to February. For families running home offices, medical equipment, or simply trying to keep food cold, these outages carry a real cost.
The Shrestha family in Bhaktapur runs a home-based tailoring business. Prior to installing an energy storage system, their two-member tailoring setup lost approximately 3–4 hours of productive work per day during winter months. They were spending NPR 12,000/month on a diesel generator — noisy, polluting, and expensive.
They had 3.2 kW of rooftop solar installed in 2021, but without storage, the energy generated during daylight was either sent back to the grid (without compensation under Nepal's current net metering scheme) or wasted entirely.
Arsa Energy conducted a site energy audit and recommended a Hithium 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) battery paired with a 5 kW hybrid inverter. LiFePO₄ chemistry was specifically chosen for its thermal stability — critical in Nepal's high-humidity monsoon climate — and its 6,000+ cycle life at 80% depth of discharge.

The family's tailoring business now runs uninterrupted from 6 AM to 10 PM regardless of grid status. The hybrid inverter automatically switches between solar, battery, and grid — with zero manual intervention. During monsoon months when solar generation is lower, the system tops up from the grid at off-peak rates (midnight to 6 AM).
The economics are most compelling for households with existing solar, frequent outages exceeding 3 hours/day, or those running home businesses with critical power needs. With lithium battery costs having fallen over 60% in the past five years, the payback window in Nepal is now 4–6 years — well within a battery's 10–15 year useful life.
